5-1: IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON (2024)

For more information about other missions, see Levels

Falling underwater is slow, but a ground slam allows for a quick return to the ground.

- The Tip of the Day.

IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON is the first mission in the WRATH layer. Similar to [ 1-3: HALLS OF SACRED REMAINS ], [ 2-3: SHEER HEART ATTACK ] and [ 5-3: SHIP OF FOOLS ], the progression is non-linear, with the level being comprised of multiple interconnected sections.

Major Areas[]

Opening area[]

The level opens on a blue-lit cavern, leading into a cave with green bio-luminescent fungi and your first Blue Hookpoint. After crossing a few pits, you will enter a bulkhead that transitions to the ruined hub.

There are no enemies here, and it generally serves as a calm opening to set the mood.

Main Cave[]

This is, of course, the main area and central hub of the level. It contains a Blue Skull door locked by three skull pedestals, each skull being behind a different door. This room is also an arena, containing the first encounter of the level - 2 Drones, 2 Strays, 4 Soldiers, and a Virtue. The player is faced with three bulkheads with three Hookpoints, which lead to the three separate arenas, listed below from left to right. There are also Fish in the room.

Three Tower Room (Tunnel A)[]

An arena filled with water, containing two two-tiered towers and a third, lower platform in the middle. All of the towers are adorned with green Hookpoints.

  • On activation, 2 Soldiers spawn on the middle platform, as well as 2 Strays, a Virtue, and a Malicious Face spawning on the opposite tower.
    • Defeating either the Virtue OR the Malicious Face will cause the same group of enemies to spawn on the original tower you appeared in, as well as another 2 Soldiers on the middle platform.

The Cavern (Tunnel B)[]

A cavern arena containing one of three blue skulls with a blue Hookpoint in the center. This fight is a bit difficult, but managing larger targets is generally the way to go. It's also one of the few pieces of dry land in the level. The fight begins with 4 Filth, 2 Malicious Faces and 2 Streetcleaners. Killing all enemies will spawn 4 Strays, 2 more Streetcleaners, a Virtue and a Mindflayer.

The Cerberi Room (Tunnel C)[]

A room with two Cerberi and a Malicious Face, in extremely tight corners. This contains one of the three blue skulls. Be careful of the splash, and be aware that lining up Electric Railcannon shots between the two Cerberi can easily knock both of them down. This is the easiest room to accidentally fail the challenge in.

Exit Tunnel[]

Two horizontal tunnels connected by a vertical shaft with a bounce pad. The skull door in the Main Cave opens up into the lower tunnel, where an encounter with 2 Streetcleaners and a backline Schism waits. If the height from the bounce pad isn't enough, a Hookpoint sits at the top of the shaft to make up the difference. The upper tunnel spawns 2 Soldiers and a Drone, made more dangerous by the tunnel's close quarters.

Water Processing Chamber[]

A gauntlet where the Sentry is first introduced. After the first two Sentries, the next few rooms function as one larger arena, with each blast door opening after all previous enemies are killed.

  • First: 2 more Sentries, placed on either side of the blast door.
  • Second: 2 Streetcleaners, 2 Soldiers, and 2 more Sentries, all in the second room.
  • Third (and finally): 1 Virtue, 4 Filth and 1 Sentry spawn back in the first room; 4 Strays spawn in the second room; and 1 Sentry in front of the Exit Elevator door.

Challenge Advice

There are three valves in the first room of the opening area, that can all be destroyed to lower the water level. The first one is directly to the left and up from the entrance, the second one is in a hole behind the first puddle, and the final one is to the right covered by stalagmites as soon as you enter the room with the first green grapple point.

The last segment of the level where Sentries are introduced can be circumvented by taking the secret exit. The shallow water puddles in the final room will still invalidate the challenge, so skipping it entirely can save some frustration.

Infact, basically the entire challenge can be skipped, at the end of any blue skull room, if you happened to have unfortunately touched any water, you can pick up the blue skull and kill yourself via explosion to restart at the last checkpoint, revalidating the challenge with the blue skull still in your hand and the room not needing any completion; though this is a bug and is likely to get fixed. This is not recommended to do if you want to complete it properly, but for any players struggling with the challenge.

Secret Mission

Right behind the last Soul Orb, in the jump pad elevator, there is an exit door to [ 5-S: I ONLY SAY MORNING ].

Trivia[]

  • This level's name is a reference to the 1970 King Crimson album of the same name.
  • The level's theme, "Deep Blue", is a pun on the phrase "deep blue sea" and the chess-playing computer "Deep Blue".[1]
  • If you're not doing the level's challenge, Electric Railcannon can find a great use here, especially in the main arena and the left skull arena. However, this requires a player to have more than 50 health.
  • Dopefish can be found in the destroyed tower.
  • A 'wake' is both a result of a massive event and a vigil at somebody's funeral.
  • This is one of the two levels so far that uses a triple-Blue Skull-lock door, the other being [ 1-4: CLAIR DE LUNE ].
  • The blast doors are reminiscent of the ones in [ 2-4: COURT OF THE CORPSE KING ].
  • Before [ 5-S: I ONLY SAY MORNING ] was fully-implemented, the door was sealed with an "UNDER CONSTRUCTION" sign; entering via Noclip would reveal a giant version of Hakita's plushie sitting atop the level exit, with the words "YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE." displaying at the bottom of the screen[2]
  • If enemy spawns are disabled, it is possible to get soft locked in the blood orb secret above Tunnel B. Collecting the blood orb will close the gates of the box but no enemies will spawn. Of course, you can just noclip out because you are using cheats anyway.
  • In desperate need of a wet floor sign.
  • The opening piano song for this level's song "Deep Blue" was originally from another song Hakita made in 2016 called "The Abyssal". Just at "doubled speed and maintained pitch"
  • Quetzal, one of the composers for the game, reused the horn effect that the Sisyphean Insurrectionist plays when spawned. Reused into Deep Blue
  • Due to the use of saxophone in said song, the wrath layer was known by the community as the "sax update" with some even saying that the sax update was better than the secret sex update
  • According to Hakita, there was “a lot of trouble writing this song due to the pressure of how much people loved the teaser. I unfortunately kept Quetzal waiting for almost a year for her to get to play her part."
