    Hooking off the Jab?

While I'm primarily a swarmer, when I straighten and box classically if pretty good at it.

I have a Strong, Stinging, Straight out straight back jab.
I also have the fastest, strongest most accurate Left hook in the gym.

I'm experimenting with a classic boxer puncher style and I'm wondering how can I hook off the jab? It feels awkward when I try it on the heavy bag and I want to perfect it there before I test it out in sparring.

    Any instructions/suggestions?

When shadow boxing, I always trow left jab, left uppercut then left hook. With right hand beloew my chin. Do this 20 times in a row,

            straight out straight back, jab.

            better?

the jab left hook sucks cause the left hook that every one knows follows the right or a slip and your body is wound up and going into it.

ill throw the jab drop my right shoulder down as im pulling the jab back then whirl the right shoulder back as i whirl the left shoulder forward and throw a hook and ill do it all as one motion like as im pulling the jab back and dropping my right im converting that potential energy in to whirling my right shoulder back which is converting the potential energy into whirling the left shoulder forward and throwing the hook. also make sure to keep your right right at your chin.

its a weaker hook but you can follow up jabs and left hooks much faster with it and its a less telegraphed hook then the normal one where you square off your upper body slightly for a second.

look at the left hook and take it apart. you got the arm swing aspect, you got the left shoulder whirl, you got the right shoulder whirl, you got the left foot rotation, and the body torqueing.

do what you need to do when you can. if you only want a distration thats going to be fast but not powerful just throw the left shoulder into the swing, alittle more power rotate the left foot even more power whirl back the right shoulder and even more power do all that and torque the body with it.

if your body isnt torqued like after a jab then you cant do that part of the left hook but you can still do everything else.

you have to align your foot work in sequence with the punch desired, when you want to throw a punch your feet have to work with you,if yuo do not have the feet doing what you want then the desired punch will not work to its fullestHooking off the Jab? Boxing Forum (5)

good post man I know exactly what you mean. It took me a while to master this move but when you pull it off it's sweet. You can really catch someone when they move at you in straight line. Just takes practice like most things.

Yeah, you definitely can. Generally people the a very short check hook right off of it. If you are trying to load up and throw the hook off the jab, you should at least slip to the left before you throw it. Jb-quick hook-and then a straight to the head or the body generally works well and is fairly simple.

defo the left slip or you can fake a straight right and then throw your hook, the fake will put your hips in a good position to throw the hook with some power
